Bacteria - Nom commun

When a person becomes infected with gonorrhea during sexual intercourse, the bacteria releases a molecule called heptose phosphate into their genital tract. Their body recognizes the heptose phosphate as a threat, and sends white blood cells to try to combat it.

Specifically, they administered salivary samples of healthy and IBD-afflicted individuals to germ-free mice respectively. After six to eight weeks, the microbial content of the mice's feces were analyzed by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing, which showed that approximately 20 kinds of oral bacteria were present in these mice. Furthermore, an immunological analysis found that the level of TH1 cells, characteristically expressing interferon-gamma protein which activates microphage to enhance bactericidal activities but could be an onset of autoimmune diseases when excessive, significantly increased in some of the mice.

Interestingly, there appears to be physiological importance of the co-existence of phages and bacterium. Some researchers suggest that this phenomenon may bring potential benefits for the bacterial host, by introducing resistance to other phages or by enhancing the capability of the bacteria to form biofilms, and therefore increase the survivability of microorganisms in their natural ecological niche. Furthermore, the occurrence of prophage sequences in bacterial genomes has also been linked to the potential pathogenicity of microorganisms, which seems particularly relevant to microorganisms living in the human body16,17,18.

Now, they’ve found evidence that these birds use the same bacteria to protect their young before they’re even born. By filming nesting females, they confirmed that the birds actively paint their eggs with their uropygial secretions.
