Although eventually supplanted by the submarine and the aircraft carrier, the battleship took pride of place in the navies of the first half of the twentieth century. The mythology of of the battleship age often understates how active many of the ships were; both World War I and World War II saw numerous battleship engagements. These are the five most important battles of the dreadnought age. The National Interest — Battleships at War: 5 Biggest Battleship Battles of the Dreadnought Age | The National Interest
In the world of rock and roll, the beat goes on, but sometimes it hits a pause that resonates through the hearts of fans and band members alike. Such a moment came with the passing of Greg "Fritz" Hinz, the legendary drummer of Canadian hard rock band Helix, at the age of 68. His battle with cancer ended on February 16, 2024, marking the close of a chapter filled with rhythm, resilience, and remarkable talent. Hinz, whose tenure with Helix spanned from 1982 to 1996 and then from 2009 until his untimely death, left a legacy that beats in the memories of those who knew him and the music he helped create. A research group led by Prof. Ge Ziyi at the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has incorporated a ductile oligomeric acceptor (DOA) into the polymer donors and small molecule acceptors (PD:SMA) system, achieving flexible organic solar cells (OSCs) with high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and mechanical robustness. The study was published in Advanced Materials. Ductile oligomeric acceptor enables highly efficient and mechanically robust flexible organic solar cells
Avec la sortie de la crise, et le retour des investisseurs en cryptomonnaies, le pump and dump 😖 est plus que jamais d’actualité. Un incident récent a néanmoins suffi pour que la plateforme crypto OKX ose enfin sévir. BeinCrypto France — Le pump and dump enfin sanctionner, merci OKX !

About once a month snakes shed their skin, a process called ecdysis that makes room for growth and gets rid of parasites. They rub against a tree branch or other object, then slither out of their skin head first, leaving it discarded inside-out. Animals — Snakes, facts and information
A B.C. property developer has been handed nearly $200,000 in administrative penalties for failing to maintain a wastewater system that leaked human effluence into an orchard-turned-vineyard and a public road. Among the problems caused by the island’s long-running tourism boom were unregulated development, and pipes carrying raw effluence directly into the sea. CNN — Philippines island Boracay reopens for test run following huge cleanup | CNN
Upon investigating Mulch and Flayer–the satellite-helper phage systems, scientists found that satellites lacked certain replication genes but had encapsidation machinery. Flayer also has a unique tail adaptation for co-infection with its helper. Interesting Engineering — 'Love bite' marks found, showing strong virus attachment
To treat chronic hepatitis B, class I CAMs induce hepatitis B virus (HBV) core protein (HBc) aggregation and sustained HBsAg reduction in AAV-HBV mice, in addition to inhibiting HBV RNA encapsidation and formation of infectious HBV particles. Antiviral activity on HBV DNA was determined in HepG2.117 cells using quantitative PCR. Both the primary effect on HBV DNA and the secondary effect on covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) establishment were studied in HBV-infected primary human hepatocytes (PHHs). Inhibition over several orders of magnitude was assessed in an optimized log drop assay. The Infinium Access UHD+ Enclosure offers maximum access and visibility to install, manage and maintain extreme fiber density of 288 fibers per 1 rack unit. Infinium Access utilizes a patented enclosure drawer release, spring-loaded top cover, access cutouts and cable management in the front and rear of the enclosure, all while employing industry-leading acclAIM™ connectivity. The Infinium acclAIM cabling solution erases the frustration of cassette-based fiber cabling connections with a simple, 3-part design that facilitates direct connections and provides virtually unlimited scalability with the lowest optical loss possible. Legrand Infinium Access UHD+ Enclosure Honored with Lightwave Innovation Award
In addition to bringing to the project a range of academic perspectives and insiders’ knowledge of the deaf world, the researchers are breaking new ground in other ways. It’s the first study of the enculturation practices of early schooling for the deaf to use a cross-cultural, comparative, ethnographic approach. It’s also the first to include videos – both as a research tool and as a final product – capturing typical days in kindergarten classrooms in schools for the deaf. Santé Publique France (SPF), the French national public health agency, has released the findings of the PEPS'PE study, which was launched in 2021. The study aims to prioritize, following extensive consultation, the health effects to be monitored for their potential link to endocrine disruptors (EDs). Out of 59 health effects suspected to be associated with exposure to EDs, 21 have been considered a priority for surveillance. Based on these results and others, SPF will expand the scope of the Agency's surveillance by incorporating new pathologies. Medscape — Surveillance for 21 Possible Effects of Endocrine Disruptors
Current understanding of how endoparasite infection impacts on wild animal hosts has yet to recognise or incorporate the role of host microbiota, which are a significant component of diversity within hosts, creating much of the biotic environment in which parasites interact (Rynkiewicz et al., 2015). To our knowledge, only one study has considered associations between parasites and microbiota in wild hosts; which, using euthanized wild mice, found the relative abundances of certain microbial taxa co-varied with helminths colonizing the gut of that host (Kreisinger et al., 2015). To make erbium qubits, erbium atoms are placed in “host materials,” where the erbium atoms replace some of the material’s original atoms. Two research groups—one at quantum startup memQ, a Chicago Quantum Exchange corporate partner, and one at the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, a CQE member—have used different host materials for erbium to advance quantum technology, demonstrating the versatility of this kind of qubit and highlighting the importance of materials science to quantum computing and quantum communication. HPCwire — Argonne and memQ Collaborate to Harness Erbium's Potential in Quantum Computing Breakthroughs
To make an erbium atom function as such a quantum repeater, two main things need to go right. First, the atom needs to emit photons quickly enough to make the scheme practical. Second, the emitted photon must preserve its quantum properties and stay entangled with the atom that emitted it despite disruptions – a property known as coherence.
