This shows a scanning electron microscope image of an 18-hour-old trochophore of the owl limpet. Trochophore are ciliated, free-swimming larvae that feed and drift in search of a good spot to set down roots before metamorphosing into their final and very different form.

These three genomes are important because they represent a group of animals that makes up between one quarter and one-third of all marine creatures. Called lophotrochozoans, they range from clams, snails and octopuses to segmented worms and even earthworms, most of which develop from an egg to an intermediate larval stage called a trochophore before metamorphosing to their final form.

Using high-resolution analytical techniques, Nelson and colleagues mapped the concentration of the trace element phosphorus within troctolite 76535. Phosphorus diffusion patterns preserved in olivine grains were consistent with a rapid cooling history at high temperatures. The observed diffusion patterns could only be reproduced with a two-stage model involving rapid cooling at high temperatures and slow cooling at lower temperatures. In contrast to the previously proposed 100-million-year cooling duration, this result supports initial rapid cooling of Mg-suite magmas within the lunar crust.

Sent to bat on a grassy pitch, Australia were soon in truble losing explosive opener David Warner for a duck at 0-1, well caught by Shai Hope at 3rd slip off Jerome Taylor. Fellow opener Shaun Marsh soon followed, trapped leg before for 11 by an inswinger by Taylor to make it 16-2. It should have been 22-3, when skipper Michael Clarke was seemingly caught and bowled by Kemar Roach off a short pitched delivery which squared him up and took the leading edge.

Mechanistic studies thus far have been limited to the proximal kidney tubule; the nephron segment located adjacent to the filtering units of the kidney where much of the initial injury occurs. However, therapeutic targeting of the proinflammatory and profibrotic pathways in the proximal tubule has failed to improve the outcomes. The response to injury located at the downstream distal tubule segment, and the identity of cells that contribute to the chronic profibrotic changes, have hitherto been largely unrecognized.

This former Brasserie Blanc breathes “massive, tumescent budget” with every mustard-glazed tile, sleek grey banquette and marble-topped table. It’s undeniably handsome in a boudoir-meets-Terry-Gilliam’s-Brazil kind of way. I hope the investment isn’t all from owners Paul and Kathryn Roden (of the Losehill House Hotel and Spa in the Peak District). On the strength of our seven-course, £49.50 tasting menu, they might have been better off with a bunch of Isas.

Under the KHP’s two-step method, troopers pulled over a motorist for an alleged traffic infraction, completed that interaction and took a few steps away from the vehicle before turning around to ask if the driver would voluntarily answer unrelated questions that might reveal information a trooper could use to order a roadside search of the vehicle. KHP attorneys argued detaining motorists with the “two-step” maneuver was a legal and appropriate action in the war on illegal drugs.

On MV’s Dec 8, 1972 front-page, one of the staff writers noted that during “each political campaign in the Marianas we hear from various candidates the vociferous cry — ‘We want to be Americans! We welcome the Americans! Have complete faith in the Americans! Let us be Americans!’ For the most part, this must be a very soul-subduing ululation for those who are fed up with the status…quo and are anxiously awaiting for the advent of a presumably new and affluent modus vivendi — total Americanization of the Marianas.”

The CDC recommended the bivalent mRNA Covid-19 vaccine—containing the original virus and a later Omicron strain—for persons aged 12 or older on September 1, 2022, and for children aged five to 11 on October 12, 2022. The bivalent vaccine was superseded last fall by a univalent vaccine against a subsequent Omicron variant. Yet limited data are available on the bivalent vaccine and subsequent univalent vaccine’s protection against infection for children and adolescents.

(Medical Xpress)—Apes, including humans, lack an enzyme called uricase that breaks down uric acid. Because we lack uricase, we are predisposed to developing gout. After reconstructing ancient versions of the enzyme found in other mammals, Eric Gaucher of the Georgia Institute of Technology and his colleagues have concluded that apes lost the ability to produce uricase so they could better convert fructose, fruit sugar, to fat for survival when fruit was scarce. The research appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

As a researcher in Mootha's lab, Jourdain wanted to know which genes and pathways cells might use to stay alive when nutrients are limited. Using a genetic screen, Jourdain and his colleagues found that the expression of two genes, UPP1 and UPP2, dramatically increases the growth of cells in media without glucose. These genes encode enzymes that help break down uridine, and cells expressing UPP1 and UPP2 grew when uridine was their only food source.

Using five to 10 feathers from the dead birds’ necks and cutting out their “dye” secreting uropygial glands, they tested if the sun really did have this bleaching effect on their feathers. They popped a bunch of feathers on the roof while others were kept in the dark and assessed how their color had changed over 40 days.

Birds look disheveled and unrecognisable as they vigorously clean their plumes. These painting and polishing sessions of birds are part of their grooming routines. Most birds do this several times a day. Called preening, it involves digging the bill into the base of the body close to the tail to take out a greasy substance called preen oil from the uropygial gland. Then, the bird sets about coating the feathers with the oil to keep them strong and flexible.

Prosalirus, discovered by Neil Shubin of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and Farish Jenkins of Harvard University, seems to be a relative of Triadobatrachus. But its sacral ribs and urostyle are almost indistinguishable from a modern frog’s (Nature, vol 377, p 49). “If you saw it hopping around in your back yard, you wouldn’t think much of it,” says Robert Carroll, an amphibian palaeontologist at McGill University in Montreal.
